Local vet becomes the first African-American to win the Westminster Kennel Club Veterinarian of the Year Award

NEW ORLEANS — The Westminster Kennel Club has announced its winner for the 2024 Veterinarian of the Year Award. This year, the club selected Dr. Treyton Diggs of Boutte, Louisiana as its recipient. Dr. Diggs is now the first African-American and Louisianan to be honored.

The annual award celebrates and supports dedicated veterinarians who make a difference in pets'  lives.

“I share this award with my amazing colleagues who stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me in making a difference, " said Dr. Diggs. "And validating the impact of veterinary medicine while simultaneously teaching our children and students that dreams accompanied with dedication, perseverance, and grit can become a reality.”

The club will also donate $10,000 in his name to Not One More Vet, "an organization working tirelessly to transform the status of the mental wellness of veterinary professionals through education, resources, and support," the release said.

There were over 200 nominations for the award across the United States, and Dr. Diggs was selected by an expert veterinary judging panel for his values, dedication, and moral compass in animal care.
