Unauthorized images of New Orleans streetcar could land $5,000 fine, here is why

The bill was discussed by state lawmakers in early March but has been deferred to the upcoming Senate Commerce committee hearing.

NEW ORLEANS — A newly introduced Louisiana Senate Bill could have people paying a $5,000 fine for using an image of New Orleans’ iconic streetcar without permission from the Regional Transit Authority.

Introduced in March, Senate Bill 340 would give branding rights to the design of the 900-series Perley A. Thomas.

This means the image of a New Orleans streetcar cannot be used in sales or advertisements of any kind without permission from the RTA.

The bill is sponsored by Louisiana Sen. Jimmy Harris, D-New Orleans.

If it becomes law, any unauthorized use of an image of the New Orleans streetcar would result in a fine not to exceed $5,000.

The bill was discussed by state lawmakers in early March but has been deferred to the upcoming Senate Commerce, Consumer Protection and International Affairs committee hearing.
