Police say a victim grabbed a suspect's gun and fired back

A shooting on Decatur Street put two men in hospital. Police say the man being assaulted grabbed the suspect's own gun and shot the suspect.

NEW ORLEANS — A shooting on Decatur Street early Wednesday morning put two men in hospital. Police say the person being assaulted grabbed the suspect's own gun and shot the suspect.

Minutes after 12:30 a.m., shots were fired on Decatur Street. NOPD says an armed man approached another man, and opened fire, wounding the victim. Police say the suspect then dragged him out of sight of cameras to physically assault him.

Police say while the man was on the ground he grabbed the suspect's gun and shot him.

Amer Bader has owned his business on Decatur Street for 17 years and says the shooting happened next door to his establishment.

"They did hear shots going on, immediately they called me, and let me know, Bader said. " I told them to stay in and not come outside under no circumstances," he said.

He says no business owner should be getting panicked calls from their staff because there was a shooting next door. Bader said, "We're in business to have fun and enjoy ourselves and enjoy everybody else and provide a good time to everyone and not say stay inside and beware of what's going on."

According to the Metropolitan Crime Commission, there have been seven shootings on Decatur Street since 2022. Three have been fatal, and four have been nonfatal.

Police say both men were injured and taken to hospital.

NOPD says 38-year-old Justin Webber was arrested and is charged with, aggravated second-degree battery, illegal use of weapons, illegal possession of a firearm in an alcoholic beverage outlet, illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and illegal possession of a stolen firearm.

Justin Webber is still undergoing medical treatment and has not yet been booked into central lockup, according to police.
