Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office celebrates retirement of beloved horse

Francis, a senior horse of OPSO, retired after serving for more than 17 years, and the sheriff sent her off in style.

NEW ORLEANS — After years of hoofin' it, one of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's mounted unit horses is hitting the happy trails.

Francis, a senior horse of OPSO, retired on Wednesday and the sheriff sent her off in style. She has been at major events across the city, including Mardi Gras parades and patrols on Bourbon Street.

Francis is 25 years old, and she's served Orleans Parish for more than 17 years. She served three sheriffs since 2007.

Over the years she's appeared in stories we've told about public safety. And the last time we saw her, she was trying to beat the summer heat. But one thing reigns true, Francis meant a lot to those who took care of her.

So no more work for Francis —  just carrots and an open pasture in her future.
