NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Museum of Modern Art has a new larger-than-life installation in its Besthoff Sculpture Garden.
It was unveiled earlier this month in honor of the garden's 20th anniversary. The sculpture is called ‘Maybe (not)’ and it's an 18-foot-tall diving board.
“Here you have this sort of giant diving board in a place that you wouldn’t expect it,” said NOMA’s Charlie Tatum. “In the middle of this swampy New Orleans lagoon. “
Tatum says it's right on the theme of what the artists, Elmgreen and Dragset, like to create.
“I think people really respond well to that humor and that playfulness,” he said.
Elmgreen and Dragset created the infamous empty Marfa Prada store installation in Valentine, Texas.
The diving board isn’t the only new piece in the garden. NOMA commissioned artist Thomas J Price to create a 9-foot-tall statue of a woman on her phone called ‘Time Unfolding.’
By the end of 2024, the garden will have 100 installations to check out. It’s free to the public and open daily during the summer until 6 p.m.
