NEW ORLEANS — An auction to help fund a 20-year reunion for Hurricane Katrina survivors is taking place Friday in New Orleans.
You may remember our story from Meg Farris about Danette Vincent. She evacuated during Hurricane Katrina and met several kids who witnessed the devastation caused by the storm.
Many of them are now grown and still scattered in other states, but she's trying to bring them all together again right here in New Orleans.
Vincent said she bonded with the kids through the use of photography.
"During Katrina, we were all displaced of course," Vincent said. " I started a program where we distributed 150 disposable cameras to friends and family. And the kids during a period of six months actually took images we had in our first exhibit, on the first anniversary. And when they saw the images from cats to dogs to trophies to feet, I mean it was fantastic."
Vincent now hopes to create new memories.
"So what we're doing now is going back and doing a retrospect. Having the old image and now capturing new images," she said.
The live auction will help pay for the reunion. The auction ends at 9 p.m. at the Helis Foundation John Scott Center.
There are 35 items to bid on from memorabilia and work from local artists to Drew Brees posters.
Live auction is here.
