Krewe of Chewbacchus prepares for cold night

The wind chill could be in the 30’s when the aliens, robots, and monsters line up Saturday.

NEW ORLEANS — The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus will roll in colder weather than normal this weekend, as another front brings freezing temperatures to both the North and South shores. Krewe leaders say they are ready for it.

“I had to go out and buy a very warm– but sparkly– jacket,” said ‘Overlord Apocalypse Meow’ Simonette Berry. “We’re also getting a very large box of Hot Hands to put in our gloves and our shoes.”

She heads up the subkrewe ‘Krewe of the Living Dead.’ Its ‘contraption’-- Chewbacchus’ catch-all term for its large artistic sculptures– is a giant zombie head. It and its kin will roll through the streets of the Marigny and French Quarter in what could be a 30-something degree wind chill.

“It’s not as much of an issue when you get going because you’re dancing, you’re having fun,” Berry said, “but when you’re standing in line and waiting for the parade that’s when you get a little cold.” She remembers parade years colder than this, though acknowledges this will likely be chiller than members are used to.

She does not think the weather will keep people away, though. The sci-fi parade is something of a cult-favorite, with unique costumes, throws, and decorations. The Krewe’s royalty– for example– will sit on a throne cradled by giant Wookie hands.

“Chewbacchus is a special night and a lot of people know that,” she said.”And I think a lot of people will come out despite the cold.”
