NOFD responds to fire in Bywater

Firefighters were on scene at the corner of Piety and Dauphine Streets around 1 p.m. after reports of a fire in the area.

NEW ORLEANS — An old building caught fire Wednesday afternoon, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

Firefighters were on scene at the corner of Piety and Dauphine Streets around 1 p.m., after reports of a fire in the area.

When crews arrived they saw a "fire coming from the roof of the building" a release said. NOFD said firefighters were sent inside to extinguish the fire, but were told to get out of the building "due to fire and weather conditions, and possible comprise of the structure."

Then a second and third alarm was called to help firefighters control and extinguish a fire in the attic of the building. Firefighters said the fire in the attic could have led to further damage to the building or homes nearby.

No injuries were reported and the fire was under control at 3:21 p.m.

About 25 NOFD units were on the scene.

The fire remains under investigation.
