N.O. East Super Bowl LIX infrastructure plans, residents call for more work to be done

Council member Oliver Thomas said he pushed for the East to be included, but said the projects need to expand beyond the Super Bowl.

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans is working to complete hundreds of infrastructure projects before Super Bowl LIX. However, some residents are asking for more work to be done in New Orleans East.

The group New Orleans East Matters sent a letter a letter to Mayor Cantrell asking for things like road improvements on Downman near the Lakefront airport, lighting repairs on I-10, and beautification projects.

But the economic development and infrastructure coordinator said most of those projects are on the list.

Council member Oliver Thomas said he pushed for the East to be included, but said the projects need to expand beyond the Super Bowl.

"Not just what about the East, let's make sure we're not just considering the East, but investing in the East," Thomas said. "We can't just be the place over the high rise. We would be the eighth largest city if we sit alone."

"We have an airport, we have 7,000 acres of land to be developed, 27 subdivisions of the highest African American earners," Thomas said. "It's past due."

Thomas said he will continue to advocate for New Orleans East and try to drive more economic development.
