New Orleans Council Committee approves Entergy gas utility sale

The proposal now goes to the full New Orleans City Council for consideration.

NEW ORLEANS — A New Orleans City Council committee has unanimously approved a proposal allowing Entergy New Orleans to sell its gas utility operations to Delta States Utilities.

The decision, made Monday morning by the council’s utilities committee, comes after years of Entergy New Orleans providing both electricity and gas services to customers in the city.

During the public meeting, council members heard presentations from Entergy and Delta States Utilities, as well as comments from the public.

Dozens of residents voiced opposition to the sale, raising concerns about the potential impact on utility rates and service.

“We would not have entertained this sale if we didn’t believe it would create the best possible outcomes for our customers, for the community we serve, and for our employees,” said Entergy New Orleans CEO Deana Rodriguez at the meeting.

Rodriguez says revenue from the sale will go into hardening the company's electrical grid.

Despite the public pushback, the committee voted to advance the proposal, which will now be considered by the full City Council.
