After nearly 20 years, Skelly Rupp Baseball Stadium reopens fully renovated

City leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday afternoon to celebrate nearly six million dollars of repairs being completed.

NEW ORLEANS — For the first time since Hurricane Katrina, the West Bank of New Orleans will have a public baseball stadium.

The Skelly Rupp Stadium in Algiers has been fully renovated nearly 20 years after it was severely damaged. City leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday afternoon to celebrate nearly six million dollars of repairs being completed.

They were also joined by the baseball teams from Edna Karr and L.B. Landry who will finally have a baseball field close by for practice and games.

"We watched the high school teams never have home games in their home community, on their home turf, and would have to travel to the East Bank," said Larry Barabino, Jr., CEO of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC).

"That ends today," Barabino added.

The field, restrooms, and the press box have all been repaired while they also made upgrades to the dugouts and batting cages.
