City leaders call for more proactivity from Entergy before disaster strikes

Last week, council members grilled Entergy over communication issues and foliage that knocked out power lines during Francine.

NEW ORLEANS — Two weeks after Hurricane Francine made landfall, Entergy, Parks and Parkways, and the Sewerage and Water Board met at City Hall to debrief.

All three agencies spoke, but Entergy was back in the hot seat.

Last week, council members grilled Entergy over communication issues and foliage that knocked out power lines during Francine.

On Wednesday, the energy company showed up with a game plan to improve communication, including a new outage notification system and more frequent meetings with council members.

Their solution for the foliage problem is unclear though. An Entergy representative said trees are only trimmed away from lines immediately if the threat is imminent.

“Why do we need to develop a process just now that there’s an issue,” City Council Member Oliver Thomas asked Entergy representatives.

City council members Eugene Green and Oliver Thomas say they want to see action before disaster strikes.

“Why do you do it this way? Why if a tree is touching a line do you address it if you know it's going to be a problem? There needs to be more proactivity,” Council member Eugene Green said.

An Entergy representative says they have plans to meet with Homeland Security and Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Colin Arnold next week.
