New library vending machine opens in Ninth Ward

The vending machine has over 200 books and DVDs that library cardholders in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes can check out for free.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Public Library unveiled its first vending machine-style library in the Ninth Ward. The vending machine has over 200 books and DVDs that library cardholders in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes can check out for free.

It's located inside NORD's Desire/Florida Multi-Service Center. Heather Riley with the New Orleans Public Library said the machine is important because it gives an underserved area access to free educational and fiction content.

"We're really excited to give this," Riley said. "And have this opportunity for some access so that people don't who live in these neighborhoods don't have to travel as far to a regular library if they don't want to."

The center is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Those who attended this Saturday's launch event were able to participate in a contest to name the machine.

The name has not been announced yet.
