Neighborhood pushback stops Tulane's plan to take over Freret Street sidewalks

Tulane President Michael Fitts recently acknowledged the pushback and the university issued a statement scrapping the plan.

NEW ORLEANS — According to WWL Louisiana media partner NOLA.com, Tulane University will not move forward with a plan to take over sidewalks on both sides of Freret Street through the heart of the Uptown campus.

Reporter Stephanie Riegel cites pushback from neighborhood opponents the reason for stopping the university's proposal to lease the sidewalks on Freret along the half-mile stretch between Calhoun Street and Newcomb Place from the city, which would make the sidewalks part of the campus.

Public safety was the primary reason for the proposed idea.

Tulane President Michael Fitts recently acknowledged the pushback and the university issued a statement scrapping the plan.

“After closely studying the feasibility and timeline for completing this project and listening carefully to our neighbors and community members – some of whom supported the lease and others who opposed it — we are now considering other options to make safety improvements.”
