NEW ORLEANS — Soul singer, and New Orleans native Jean Knight, best known for her hit – “Mr. Big Stuff” – has died at age 80.
As TMZ reports, a statement released by the family says she passed away on Wednesday, November 22. Knight was born Jean Caliste in New Orleans on January 26, 1943.
The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee began her career to stardom with “Doggin’ Me Around” which led to the 1971 hit song she is known best for – “Mr. Big Stuff.”
“Mr. Big Stuff, which became famous for the infectious refrain, “Who do you think you are?”, wasn’t just a chart-topping anthem; it was the product of soulful, syncopated melodies that echoed through the Cresent City,” a statement from the family said, according to TMZ.
“Jean’s powerhouse performances at the Essence Music Festival and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival were Legendary, with every note reflecting her sassiness and joyous spirit. Her concerts were not just performances but celebrations of the enduring bond she shared with those who appreciated her music. Whether in the intimate venues of the French Quarter or on the grand stages of global music festivals, Ms. Knight made every fan a cherished part of her extended musical family.”
