Louisiana mom inspired by daughters to write kids book on financial literacy

Samuel-Britten’s book, 'Kennedi and Kassedi Learn Investing,' is currently available on Amazon.

NEW ORLEANS — When LaKeyta Samuel Britten wanted to teach her young daughters about money, becoming a children’s book author wasn’t what she expected. However, that’s exactly what happened.

“I wanted to make sure that I could really help them through that process,” said Samuel Britten.

The South Louisiana mom watched as her daughters showed interest in the stock market, thanks in part to her mom, their Mimi. Samuel Britten quickly realized there weren’t many educational resources for kids. So, she did some research.

“Got into YouTube videos, even TikToks. There’s a lot of information out there with that and then I started going to the library,” said Samuel Britten. “One thing led to another.”

After about 9 months she self-published a book, “Kennedi and Kassedi Learn Investing.” It’s the story of two girls learning about investing from their Mimi. Using her daughters and mom as inspiration, Samuel Britten hopes to bridge a gap in financial literacy.

“Most of us do not have a background in financial education and we are afraid of the stock market,” said Samuel Britten. “We have to make sure that we are putting ourselves in a financial situation that can help our future.”

Between the 24 pages are easy-to-understand lessons about investing. While written for kids, these lessons are also for adults.

“Money is something that makes the world go round. So, all of us need to have an education on it, the purpose of the money, and how it’s set up for us to use,” said Samuel Britten.

Samuel Britten doesn’t want to stop at just lessons on investing.

“I want to make this a series of different things that we can get people to understand basically the basics of life, the things we deal with on a regular basis,” said Samuel Britten.

Samuel-Britten’s book is currently available on Amazon. She’s working with her daughters’ school to bring lessons to the classroom.
