Mayor Cantrell travels to Montréal to attend Climate Change Summit

The mayor had faced scrutiny for using taxpayer funds to purchase flight upgrades for her previous foreign trips.

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is in Canada to participate in the 3rd Annual Montreal Climate Summit.

The City of New Orleans says the summit's purpose is to discuss climate issues that impact cities across North America.

“Do more. Do better. Faster” is the summit’s call to action theme.

"When you hear the reports of how climate issues are impacting emergency weather conditions, it is vital to have a collective mission to proactively plan for climate issues, because we are stronger together," said Mayor Cantrell.

Cantrell joins Montréal Mayor Valérie Plante and other international leaders to discuss ways to combat climate change.

This is not the first summit on climate change Mayor Cantrel has attended.

In December, Cantrell traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates where she stayed for at least 6 days to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP28.

And in March of this year, Cantrell traveled to Miami, Florida to attend the Climate Mayors Leadership Forum and Aspen Ideas: Climate.

While it is unclear how the mayor’s recent trip was funded, Cantrell has faced scrutiny for using taxpayer funds to pay for upgraded flights for past foreign trips, violating city policy. Cantrell was forced to reimburse the city for those past travels.
