State Police reopen Hwy 90 near Houma after marsh fire smoke caused unsafe conditions

This is the second day in a row that authorities had to close the highway in that area because of smoke from the marsh fire. Several area schools were also closed.

LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. — A burning marsh fire near Houma forced Louisiana State Police and Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to close a portion of Highway 90 in both directions Thursday morning.

Louisiana State Police reopened Highway 90 and LA Highway 182 at about 10:00 a.m. Troopers said they will continue to monitor visibility conditions throughout the day and evening.

This is the second day in a row that authorities had to close the highway in that area because smoke from the marsh fire is causing poor visibility and unsafe conditions for drivers.

US Hwy 90 was closed between LA Hwy 316 (Bayou Blue Road) and LA Hwy 182 at the Houma/Raceland Exit 210 for most of the morning commute.

LA Hwy 182 was also closed between LA Hwy 653 and LA Hwy 660 (Coteau Road) because of poor visibility due to the dense smoke.

As a result of the road closures, Lafourche Parish Public School administrators had to close several schools Thursday morning.

Below is a list of Lafourche Parish schools closed Thursday morning in the Houma/Raceland area.

  • Raceland Lower Elementary
  • Raceland Upper Elementary
  • Raceland Middle
  • Bayou Blue Elementary
  • Bayou Blue Upper Elementary
  • Bayou Blue Middle
  • Central Lafourche High School
  • St. Mary's Nativity School
