NEW ORLEANS — A man pleaded guilty to a series of burglaries that impacted residents and churches between October 2022 and this year in May. He faces a one-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to six counts of simple burglary and two counts of theft under $1,000 last week.

The suspect is identified as 52-year-old Brian K. Carter, who targeted a gated Garden District apartment, where he stole residents' Amazon packages last year in November. According to our partners at Nola.com, surveillance footage showed Carter putting the packages in a laundry basket and leaving, court documents revealed.

Carter robbed multiple churches, stealing a hand truck and several cases of water and paper products, a police application for an arrest warrant showed. During his heists, he also broke windows, including a storage shed, our partners at Nola.com reported.

The churches included in his scheme were the African Methodist Episcopal church in the Milan area last October and the Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church in May 2022, located on Louisiana Avenue.

Nola.com reported that Carter also admitted to a burglary at Opportunities Academy, a charter school for young people with disabilities.

Judge Angel Harris sentenced Carter to one year in state prison for his felony convictions on simple battery and six months for the misdemeanor theft under $1,000 charges in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. The sentences are set to run simultaneously.
