Man dead after boat crash in Ascension Parish; father arrested officials say

Officials said a father and son boating trip took a tragic turn Saturday night

ASCENSION PARISH, La. -- One man is dead and his father is facing charges after a fatal boat wreck Saturday night.

Officials with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Patrick White, 53, and his son Caleb White, 37, set out on a boat Saturday morning to go fishing.

Around 9 a.m., when they were returning from their trip, the elder White told them he hit a bulkhead with the boat. Officials believe Caleb was thrown from the boat and hit the bulkhead before ricocheting back into the boat.

Authorities said an agent on patrol in the area found the boat up against the bulkhead and was able to get the two men onto his boat and call from an ambulance. The agent said at that time both men were responsive, but Caleb died on the way to the hospital.

Officials said they performed a field sobriety test on Patrick and he was found to be over the legal limit. He was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, operating or driving a vessel while intoxicated and reckless operation.

Authorities said vehicular homicide brings to fine of $2,000 to $15,000, and five to 30 years in prison. DWI carries a $300 to $1,000 fine and 10 days to six months in jail. Reckless operation brings up to a $200 fine and 90 days in jail.
