LSU student from Covington dies after being struck by car

It is unknown why the student was standing in the middle of the road when she was hit by a vehicle.

BATON ROUGE, La. — An LSU student struck by an oncoming vehicle while standing in the middle of Burbank Drive on Sunday morning died from her injuries the school said Monday.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said the crash happened on Burbank Drive at Pelican Lakes Parkway around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

On Monday, the woman, identified as LSU sophomore and Alpha Phi member Madison Brooks, 19, of Covington, succumbed to her injuries. 

It is unknown why Brooks was standing in the middle of the road when she was hit by a vehicle. 

She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Deputies said they do not believe or suspect impairment from the driver.

LSU said in a statement:

"It is with great sadness that we learned that one of our students, Madison Brooks, passed away on January 15. This is a tragedy for all of us at LSU, especially Madison’s family, friends, sorority sisters, and classmates. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them as they go through this extremely difficult time and begin the grieving process.

 Any of her friends and classmates who would like to speak with someone about this or needs help processing this loss can contact the Mental Health Service in the Student Health Center at 225-578-8774. The Student Health Center will be open tomorrow for the start of the spring semester."
