Carlo Ferrara, longtime Harahan mayor, dies

The 'Harahan Legend' and U.S. Air Force veteran served as mayor until 1994.

HARAHAN, La. — According to WWL Louisiana media partner NOLA.com, former Harahan mayor and alderman, Carlo Ferrara, died on Sunday at age 95.

Blake Paterson reported Ferrara's death on Thursday morning.

Ferrara was elected alderman in Harahan in 1970, and served in that role until he was appointed interim mayor in 1980, a position he later won in a special election. He served off and on until 1994, before one more 4-year stint on Harahan's Board of Alderman.

During his life, Ferrara, born in 1929, he served as a school bus driver, bowling alley and service station operator, entrepreneur, real estate developer and U.S. Air Force veteran.

Ferrara is survived by his wife of 35 years, Katherine P. Ferrara, as well as his daughter, Anne Marie Villarrubia, and granddaughters, Kayla Anne Himel and Ashley Marie Ortiz.

Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at St. Rita Catholic Church in Harahan followed by a funeral mass. Interment will be held privately at a later date at Lake Lawn Mausoleum in New Orleans.
