NEW ORLEANS — Residents looking to responsibly dispose of their used cooking oil after the Thanksgiving holiday will be able to do so at drop-off locations in both Orleans and Jefferson parishes.
Officials warn against dumping the oil down the kitchen drain as it can cause backups and sewerage overflows. Instead, officials say to throw it in the trash if you cannot make it to a drop-off site.
According to the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the Office of Resilience & Sustainability, is encouraging Orleans Parish residents to take their used oil to the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center at 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue.
Drop-off will be accepted:
- Saturday, Nov. 30
- Saturday, Dec. 7
The Recycling Drop-Off Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both days.
Note: Businesses and organizations are not eligible for Recycling Drop-Off services.
Orleans Parish residents are asked to bring their used cooking oil in a sealed container to the drop-off site. Residents are allowed to dispose of five gallons of cooking oil per day and must present a valid identification card with an Orleans Parish address or an Orleans Parish brake tag on their vehicle.
Residents in Jefferson Parish can take the oil to a drop-off location on 400 David Drive in Metairie and another at 6440 Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero.
Those drop-off times are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
The drop-off sites will be closed on the Thanksgiving holiday, but will reopen at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29.
Residents are allowed to dispose of 5 gallons of cooking oil per day and must present a valid driver’s license or water bill with a Jefferson Parish address.
