NEW ORLEANS — Kenner native, Jon Batiste is set to win big again at the Grammys, he's been nominated for six awards. However, he's not the only local getting recognized, many others are up for awards, with an entire category dominated by groups from our area.
The New Breed Brass Band are nominated for "Best Regional Roots Music Album" at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, with their album called "Made in New Orleans".
Snare drummer Jenard Andrews says just being nominated is an honor, saying, "We worked real hard on this project and for it to get the recognition, it's an amazing feeling."
He went on to say, music runs through his blood, saying, "We worked with my Uncle, Trombone Shorty. He definitely was a big inspiration, a big part of this project being so successful."
"To be honest, we got in the studio, when we got in the studio we really had nothing, everything was just vibes."
Jon Batiste was nominated for six awards this year, including; Best Pop Duo, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Jazz Performance, and Best American Roots Performance. This comes just two years after he was nominated for 11 awards, that night he won five.
Batiste said, "Ultimately writing this symphony and understanding that the intrinsic value of this piece meant more than a career milestone."
New Orleans has always taken pride in local music and culture, and many are happy to see it recognized on a national level.
DJ Hollygrove told WWLTV, "People steal ideas from the South... When Drake did the Bounce remix... then you started seeing everybody doing it, Chris Brown, London on the Track, so just to have the appreciation, and have somebody really appreciate you and also have the Grammy which is the biggest thing which you can get in music, to recognize a band in New Orleans is amazing."
The Grammy's are set to air here on WWLTV on Feb.4.
