Video connected to fatal shooting at Houma nightclub released

Police were called around 2:15 a.m. to the 600 block of Corporate Drive to investigate shots fired, the Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office said.

HOUMA, La. — Authorities have released a video related to the Saturday shooting that left a man dead outside of a Houma nightclub.

Police were called around 2:15 a.m. to the 600 block of Corporate Drive to investigate shots fired, the Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies found a 30-year-old Houma man identified as Andrew Naquin suffering from gunshot wounds. He was treated on the scene before being flown to a New Orleans hospital where he died.

Deputies learned that after the nearby Vino’s Nightclub closed, people were lingering in the parking lots when a fight broke out, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The gunshots were fired during the fight, and the suspects fled in a silver Dodge Charger, authorities said.

Deputies obtained a description of the vehicle and the information was sent out over the radio, the Sheriff’s Office said. An off-duty deputy working a security detail at a casino on La. 20 in Thibodaux spotted it traveling north on La. 20.

The deputy followed and stopped it, authorities said. Three suspects were driven to the Sheriff’s Office, where they were questioned by detectives.

As of Monday, none of the people questioned had been charged with a crime, Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said.

The sheriff said he was compelled to release the video to dispel misleading information circulating on social media.

“When the call came in our deputies were on the scene in less than three minutes,” Larpenter said. “Widely circulated misinformation includes false statements about the number of shots fired. Our deputies recovered five shell casings. This video and other evidence indicate self-defense may be a factor. We have a good relationship with the district attorney’s office and its staff and value their guidance. Our detectives are experienced and well-trained in determining if probable cause for an arrest exists. Prosecutors must ultimately be able to prove guilt of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Authorities said Naquin and another man were the “aggressors in his altercation.”

The newly released video shows Naquin and another man shoving, striking and knocking down several men behind and toward the right of a vehicle. The shooting occurs off camera in a matter of seconds.

“This is in all ways an open investigation,” Larpenter said. “We ask that anyone who witnessed this shooting or has relevant information to call 876-2500.”
