VIDEO: Thibodaux police officer shoots, kills dog

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. on Christmas day in the 600 block of North Canal Boulevard.

THIBODAUX, La. — The Thibodaux Police Department says they are investigating an incident after an officer used lethal force on a loose dog.

Video obtained by WWL-TV shows the dog running in and out of traffic. A person appears to be trying to grab the dog, and the officer shoots it when it gets close to him.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. on Christmas day in the 600 block of North Canal Boulevard.

When the officer arrived on the scene, he learned that a loose dog from a nearby neighborhood was running in and out of traffic on the roadway. Several people at the scene, including the officer, attempted to capture the dog.

Thibodaux PD says while people were trying to capture the dog, it attacked the officer, biting him on the backside of his body.

"As the dog appeared to charge at another bystander, the officer was forced to discharge one gunshot striking the dog, ultimately causing the dog to succumb from the injury," Thibodaux Police said.

The officer was taken to a nearby medical facility to be treated for his injuries.
