Two 16-year-olds killed, 14-year-old badly hurt in single car crash

LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. — Two 16-year-olds were killed and a 14-year-old is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following a single car crash in Lafourche Parish Thursday night, according to State Police.

Police said that the driver, 16-year-old Tristan Hartman of Thibodaux, died from his injuries on Saturday. A front seat passenger, 16-year-old Ashton Newkirk, also of Thibodaux, died at the scene. A 14-year-old was being treated at the hospital.

According to State Police, the crash occurred around 9 p.m. on Louisiana Highway 1 near Welcome Road.

Police said the 2008 Chevrolet Impala was traveling at a high rate of speed in a left curve on La. Hwy. 1 when it traveled off the roadway and struck a culvert head on.

Police said Hartman and Newkirk were properly restrained in the front seat, while the 14-year-old was not properly restrained.

Toxicology tests are pending.

Troop C said it has unfortunately investigated 30 fatal crashes that claimed 35 lives in 2023.
