Conserve water order lifted in Lafourche Parish after oil spill

The water district no longer needs to shut down its bayou intake pumps.

LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. — Lafourche Parish residents no longer have to conserve water, according to parish officials.

Over the weekend, the parish's water district ordered all residents to conserve water after an estimated 820 barrels, which is 34,440 gallons, somehow poured into a drainage ditch connected to the bayou.

The water district no longer needs to shut down its bayou intake pumps.

"Sample results continue to indicate the oil spill has not affected the water quality at the treatment plant and the water continues to be treated," officials said.

On Tuesday, Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson said most of the oil is contained and expects clean-up to finish next week.
