Invading wild boars push City of Kenner to hire trapper

The wild animals were mostly spotted in the Woodlake subdivision and areas around the Kenner Lakefront, and neighborhoods along the wetlands in west Kenner.

KENNER, La. — Residents in Kenner say wild animals such as hogs and coyotes have invaded their neighborhoods, and the City of Kenner is taking action.

“Due to growing concerns regarding wildlife throughout Kenner, the City has deployed a wildlife mitigation specialist who will begin immediately to address this growing issue. You may see a presence of this team in Kenner during the next month,” the City of Kenner announced.

Kenner has hired wildlife specialist and trapper John Schmidt to mitigate the wild hogs and coyotes damaging yards and gardens in Kenner according to Nola.com.

The wild animals were mostly spotted in the Woodlake subdivision and areas around the Kenner Lakefront, and neighborhoods along the wetlands on the western edge of Kenner.

Under Louisiana law dangerous animals, like hogs, coyotes, nutria skunks, and alligators cannot be relocated and must be euthanized within 12 hours of being captured.

Invading wild hogs have also been reported in St. Charles Parish and for years wild boars have troubled New Orleans East residents.

WWL Louisiana reported on Jaime Yepez’s encounter with wild boars as they ripped apart his backyard and car.

“Pigs or wild boars ripped up this entire backyard and side yard,” said Yepez’s daughter Gayle Perez as she showed WWL’s Amelia Strahan the damage the pigs left behind.
