John Ehret High School band to put on concert to honor the life of beloved band director

The concert will be held on Saturday, May 25 at L.B. Landry High School.

NEW ORLEANS — John Ehret's Marching Band is honoring its beloved band director, Marvin Haywood, who passed away two weeks ago, with a special mass band performance.

The concert will celebrate the life of Haywood on Saturday, May 25, at L.B. Landry High School.

"This unique event will bring together all musicians taught by him, creating a powerful ensemble united in their shared respect and admiration," Ehret's band posted on Instagram.

Haywood and the "Pride of Marrero" Marching Band were featured in WWL Louisiana's Carnival coverage back in February. He instructed his students to have "respect, integrity, determination and [to be] extraordinary." The Ehret community, family and friends are now mourning the loss of their beloved band director.

In just three years, Haywood grew the school's marching band, and it started by making everyone feel at home. Ehret's marching band began with just 13 kids and has grown to nearly 80 members under his guidance.

The school is allowing local musicians and students to participate. Later this week, they will have three practice dates before performing at Haywood's Celebration of Life.

Viewing starts at 8 a.m., service begins at 10 a.m., and the repast follows at 12:30 p.m.
