Schools open, absences excused after power outage in JP Westbank

Crews are still working to restore power to thousands of customers.

Entergy Louisiana says a vehicle crashing into a substation Thursday night caused widespread power outages on the Westbank overnight.

Entergy spokesperson Mike Burns said the crash happened around 10:45 p.m. Thursday night. The resulting outage impacted approximately 25,000 customers from Westwego to Marrero.

According to the Entergy outage map, more than 3,800 customers are still without power as of noon Friday. The remaining outages are located between the Mississippi River to Lapalco Blvd. in the Westwego area.

“Crews are working to safely repair damage and restore power as quickly as possible,” a statement from Entergy said. “We appreciate your patience as they keep safety first.”

The Jefferson Parish Public School System says the power outage impacts five Westwego area schools: Butler Elementary Thibodeaux Elementary, Pitre Elementary, Worley Middle and Patrick F. Taylor Academy.

JPPSS says that student absences will be excused Friday if parents wish to keep their child at home or check them out early due to a power outage. Parents looking to check out their student can do so at the school's main office.

"School will still be in session, transportation will be provided and meals will still be served to students who attend the schools impacted by today's power outage," JPPSS said.

JPPSS says the power is expected to be restored to those campuses by noon.
