JPSO says deputy fired at driver of stolen car; chase and crash ensued

There was no immediate word as to why the deputy fired at the driver.

METAIRIE, La. — A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy fired his weapon in the direction of what the JPSO says was a stolen car targeted as part of a criminal investigation late Monday afternoon.

The incident began around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Clearview Parkway and Veterans Blvd. near the Clearview Mall.

According to JPSO spokesman Brandon Veal, when deputies tried to remove a passenger from the vehicle, at some point and for reasons not immediately known, a deputy fired in the direction of the driver, who then sped off.

Veal said a chase ensued and that the driver of the vehicle crashed the car into another vehicle near Veterans Blvd. and 26th Street. The suspect then got out and ran but was apprehended a short distance away.

A second person was arrested at the original location.
