KENNER, La. — The Kenner Police Department took to social media on Thursday afternoon to announce the death of longtime political candidate and civic activist Al Morella.
According to Kenner PD, Chief Conley grew concerned with Morella's absence at a Veteran's Day ceremony on Wednesday and additionally learned Morella missed a Jefferson Parish Council meeting on Wednesday.
The retired Navy veteran and longshoreman was a frequent attendee at both Kenner and Jefferson Parish council meetings, and in 2015 ran for Jefferson Parish President eventually won by Mike Yenni. He also unsuccessfully ran for Mayor of Kenner.
Police said the department received multiple queries as to Morella's whereabouts and later confirmed his death after conducting a welfare check at 11:15 a.m.
Morella was found deceased in his residence.
Kenner Mayor Michael Glaser issued a statement shortly after Morella's death was announced.
“It is with sadness that we have learned of the loss of a proud Kenner and Jefferson Parish resident," stated Glaser. "Al was a proud patriot who served our country and was known across Jefferson Parish and Kenner for his unwavering commitment to integrity and accountability. In his own way, Al held government officials to the highest standards, tirelessly advocating for transparency. His legacy as a fierce watchdog of taxpayer dollars will live on. We will remember him and will miss his strong presence at our meetings and in our community.”
Police said there was no indication of foul play.
This is a developing story.
