Student says bus driver forced them off bus miles away from bus stop, mother speaks out

The mom said she found her son sitting alone. Jefferson Parish School District and the bus provider, First Student, said they are investigating the incident.

KENNER, La. — When Tobias Ayhens’ bus left J.D. Meisler Middle School last Thursday, he says his driver took a different route than usual.

“I was kind of scared,” a 6th grader at J.D. Meisler School Tobias Ayhens said.

When his mom, Katherine Ayhens tracked down his location at pickup time, he was two miles away from his bus stop.

“I just could not figure out logically how this could’ve happened,” Katherine Ayhens said.

The sixth grader claims his bus driver forced him to get off at the Maxwell Apartments on Edenborn Avenue, two miles away from his stop at Taft Park and South Service Road.

“I told her this isn’t my stop. I don’t go here. She said I should get off anyway,” Tobias Ayhens said.

When Katherine got to him, Tobias was safe but soaking wet and sitting alone.

“I just cannot wrap my mind around an excuse for this,” Katherine Ayhens said.

We reached out to Jefferson Parish School District to find out exactly what happened. They told us,  “We are aware of a bus incident that occurred on August 29, involving a First Student bus with JP Students and we are actively investigating the matter”

The school’s bus provider, First Student, also says they’re looking into the incident.

Until Katherine gets answers, she’ll be taking over transportation.

“I just don’t trust them at this point to keep him safe,” Katherine Ayhen said.

As for Tobias, he’s ready to get back to the bus, but says he’s enjoying the extra time with Mom for now.
