METAIRIE, La. — The Louisiana State Police began investigating a fatal crash involving five vehicles that claimed the lives of two drivers shortly after midnight on Monday.

The incident occurred on Interstate 10 westbound near Bonnabel Boulevard in Metairie. Troopers said the crash claimed the lives of 78-year-old Carlos Martinez of Kenner and 66-year-old Betty Savoie of Metairie.

According to LSP, the investigation revealed a disabled 2012 Kia Soul was abandoned on the roadway after a collision with a 2017 Toyota Tundra. A 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by Martinez crashed into the Kia, followed by Savoie's 2006 Infiniti G35 striking his Corolla in which he was fatally struck while outside the vehicle attempting to notify other motorists of the situation.

Savoie's G35 was then impacted by a 2014 BMW X5 that was also traveling west on I-10.

Both Martinez and Savoie were pronounced dead on the scene.

Routine toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis, however, the LSP says impairment is not suspected.

The crash remains under investigation.
