KENNER, La. — Lexis Staub saw her nephew for the last time on Christmas day.
“He just wanted to slide,” she said. “He kept sliding and sliding and he didn’t want to go home. He just wanted to slide all day.”
Now, those memories are all she has of him.
“Leo was happiest when he was with us,” Staub remembered. “Playing with my daughter. Them two were supposed to grow up together.”
Leo Vincent Callero was found dead in his Kenner home on New Year’s Eve. He was just 1-year-old.
According to Kenner police, the coroner found a fatal dose of Fentanyl in his system.
His mother, 34-year-old Alexis Callero, was arrested earlier this week for second-degree murder, cruelty to a juvenile and various drug charges.
"It's no longer uncommon occurrence,” Capt. Michael Cunningham with the Kenner Police Department said. “It's very common now to go on scenes where there is drug use, and we find children in there."
Cunningham says officers found heroin and cocaine in the same room as Leo. Both tested positive for Fentanyl.
“It’s not that Alexis didn’t love him,” Staub said. “She loved him, but she didn’t care enough for him to give him the love that he needed.”
Now, his family is planning a funeral for the 1-year-old boy. Something no family should ever have to do.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Leo’s family cover funeral expenses. If you’d like to make a contribution, click here.
