JPSO: Man taken into custody after firing shots at deputies during SWAT standoff

According to JPSO, a man is barricaded inside a residence near the corner of North Turnbull Drive and West Esplanade Avenue.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office declared a SWAT roll in Metairie, La., at approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24.

According to JPSO, a man is barricaded inside a residence near the corner of North Turnbull Drive and West Esplanade Avenue.

WWL Louisiana's Paul Murphy reported that the man's wife called JPSO due to her husband allegedly having some mental episodes over the past few days. When deputies arrived, the man reportedly fired a shot in their direction.

JPSO immediately shut down the streets in the neighborhood and called in SWAT.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the man's wife attempted to obtain an emergency committal from a doctor earlier in the day. Another family member allegedly arrived at the home in an effort to convince the man to go to the hospital for help when a physical altercation occurred, which prompted deputies to be called.

"When our deputies arrived on the scene, they communicated with him through the front window and he ended up firing shots from inside the house," Lopinto explained. "Our deputies retreated at that point in time. Did not return fire...and we ended up setting a perimeter and activating our negotiation team and SWAT team."

Lopinto said negotiations lasted for several hours and the suspect fired additional shots – at least one of which took out a JPSO robot being used on the scene.

The man was finally taken into custody as he exited through the back door of the residence. Lopinto said the man will be taken to the hospital for evaluation.

No word yet on what charges the man will face once released from medical treatment.

The sheriff said no one was injured during the standoff despite multiple shots fired.
