MARRERO, La. — Authorities say a deputy shot and killed a suspect following a brief chase in Marrero on Wednesday night.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened shortly after 10:20 p.m. after deputies attempted to stop a red Ram pickup truck near Ames Boulevard and Westbank Expressway.
The JPSO said the driver refused to stop and led deputies on a brief car chase that ended near Salome Street. The driver then reportedly ran away on foot on Salome Street to Eiseman Avenue before he tripped and fell to the ground.
"As a deputy approached him to apply handcuffs, the suspect then turned and pointed a firearm at the deputy," Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said. "The deputy fired multiple times at the suspect, who was struck by gunfire."
Lopinto said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office is not releasing his name until family members can be notified about his death.
Lopinto said the man had two guns and drugs which were recovered at the scene.
