An inmate died while in custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center Saturday morning.
According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the inmate, a 30-year-old woman, was found unresponsive inside her cell in the center’s medical facility around 6 a.m. while deputies were conducting the breakfast feeding duties.
The woman was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office says the woman was being housed in the onsite medical facility for a pre-existing medical condition.
The sheriff’s office notes information on the woman’s specific condition is not known as her medical records are held at the correctional center.
