Jefferson Parish to vote on new Amazon facility in Elmwood

The proposed warehouse will focus on same-day deliveries, utilizing private drivers to drop off purchases at nearby homes.

ELMWOOD, La. — On Wednesday, the Jefferson Parish Council will consider merging two Amazon-owned undeveloped lots in the Elmwood Industrial Park Subdivision into a distribution warehouse – pending a zoning change.

Jefferson Parish Council member Deano Bonano told Nola.com that the proposed warehouse will focus on same-day deliveries, utilizing private drivers to drop off purchases at nearby homes.

According to Bonano, Amazon would stagger its peak hours between 1-3 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. to have minimal traffic impact.

Bonano told Nola.com that under its current classification, the property at 6000 Mounes St. – bounded by S. Al Davis Road and Dickory Avenue – could be used as a truck stop, video poker shop, or large multi-unit apartment complex without parish consent.

"There's far more onerous uses than just a warehouse," Bonano said.

According to Nola.com, the Planning Department voted to recommend approval of the request, while the Planning Advisory Board voted to recommend denial.

Bonano said Amazon has agreed to build a 12-foot wall and temporarily move the entrance at the request of concerned residents.
