Jefferson Parish IG reports 'high risk' areas in annual audit

An audit is already underway with the East Bank Fire Department to "determine whether sick leave is being used properly by employees", our partners reported.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — The Jefferson Parish Office of the Inspector General reported five entities at "high risk" of misconduct during its annual assessment of the parish government, Nola.com reported.

On Friday, the report identified the following entities at "high risk" of corruption, fraud, or mismanagement including the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department, parish personnel department, purchasing department, building permits department, and recreation department.

According to our partners, the office is set to conduct audits and evaluations on The East Bank Consolidated Fire Department, procurement and contracting, personnel department, and Hospital Service District No. 1, "which gets parish revenue from the West Jefferson Medical Center."

An audit is already underway with the East Bank Fire Department to "determine whether sick leave is being used properly by employees". The audit is expected to be completed this year.

Due to available resources, not every high-risk area will be audited, the report said.

The inspector general's office conducted the annual assessment through interviews with parish officials and reviews of financial reports and public information like news articles. Our partners reported that over 150 areas of the parish were scored and ranked.

Other evaluations are also underway, including how the parish recruits employees. Reports are set to be completed by the end of the year.
