Former Gretna police officer accused of shooting, killing neighbor's dog

GRETNA, La. – A former Gretna police officer was arrested Monday for allegedly shooting and killing his neighbor’s dog with a BB gun.

Authorities said they were able to get surveillance video from several locations of the shooting. On Feb. 19, police said the dog was hit behind his right leg, and the pellet entered his heart, killing him.

Police said their investigation showed the angle and direction of the shot, which came from 45-year-old Ben Bearden’s home. Bearden and his wife have filed several complaints about the dog for barking, officials added.

Police said Bearden retired from the police force more than five year ago for personal matters.

Bearden was booked with cruelty to animals. His bond has been set at $10,000.
