JEFFERSON, La. — The Louisiana State Police announced they have arrested a suspect they say fatally struck a pedestrian with a car late evening on August 16.

The deadly hit-and-run crash claimed the life of 37-year-old Sue Ella Cechman of Metairie. The woman was taken to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

According to investigators, the victim was attempting to cross Jefferson Highway at Claiborne Court when she was hit by an unknown vehicle traveling west on the highway before 11:45 p.m.

Following the incident, the driver sped off in the vehicle and has yet to contact law enforcement.

Through the investigation, LSP investigators determined that 36-year-old Britney Holmes of Westwego was driving a 2008 Nissan Sentra when it struck Cechman. She was transported to the hospital where she later died from her injuries.

During the course of the investigation, Troopers say they learned that Holmes took actions to conceal evidence of the crash.

On August 24, 2024, Holmes was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center for Manslaughter, Obstruction of Justice, and Hit-and-Run Driving.
