Community trying to cope with brutal double murder

As police search for a suspect in a brutal double in which two parents were shot and killed earlier this week inside their Kenner apartment while their children were at home, the community is searching for ways to help the family.

Taiganna Kimbrough was looking forward to graduating next month and her only wish was to celebrate her achievement with all of her family and friends. "And now I don't have that because my uncle is not here," she said.

On Monday, Raynell Kimbrough and Dawn Ellen Scott were shot to death as they slept inches away from their two-month-old daughter. According to police, a 10-year-old and a two-year-old child were also in the home. None of the children were hurt and are in the custody of their grandmother.

"It's better for them to be around their grandma, so they can get a better understanding, so they wouldn't have to cry," said Kimbrough.

Monday night, the community came together to pray. On Friday night, the community came together to celebrate people who they say were fun-loving.

"It's hurtful because my uncle was the baby boy," said Kimbrough. "My uncle was a very loving person. Who wouldn't love him?"

Part of the celebration was a crawfish boil and music. The couple's neighbor, Jessica Marchand, said they had just become friends, as they had just moved into the neighborhood.

"My son would go knock her door (and ask), 'Can your son come out and play?" said Marchand.

After hearing the devastating news, she said she had to do something. She called the family and said she wanted to put on a fundraiser.

"I love these girls. I really, really love these girls," Marchand said. "I have new sisters in town. I can say that because they make me feel I need to be there for them. And so now that I'm here for them, I'm always going to be there for them."
