MARRERO, La. — One community gathered on Saturday to stand with a Jefferson Parish school following a controversial arrest of student on its campus earlier this month.
Members and leadership of the Greater Mount Calvary Church held a “Community Appreciation Day” in Marrero on Saturday morning focused on showing support for the students, staff and parents of L.W. Higgins High School.
“We live in a time where encouragement sometimes is hard to find. So our purpose for being here today is to gather the community to let the staff, the students, the administration and all that makes up L.W. Higgins High School know this one thing: That they are not alone," an organizer said.
Last month, an 18-year-old student was arrested at the school following a disputed incident between him and a Jefferson Parish deputy that was partially caught on video.
Students then staged a protest over his arrest that led to at least one other student being arrested.
Last week, extra law enforcement were put in the school after a threatening social media post was faxed to administrators. The threat was deemed not to be credible.
