JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — Residents on the East Bank of Jefferson Parish are under a boil water advisory after a break in the water main outside the treatment plant.
The outage and boil water advisory are affecting the entirety of the East Bank, including Kenner and Harahan.
Officials said in an update around 9 p.m., "the Water Department and Emergency Crews are on site working as fast as possible and throughout the night; however, there is currently no estimated time of when water pressure will be restored. Once water pressure is restored, it’s important to remind residents that we are still under a boil water advisory. We will issue a notice as soon as this is lifted."
All three eastbound lanes of Jefferson Hwy from Central Ave to Shrewsbury Rd will be closed Wednesday morning during rush hour. The traffic detour will be North to Airline or South to River Road, to Shrewsbury, and back to eastbound Jefferson Hwy.
Jefferson Parish Head Start Centers, Community Centers, Libraries, and JPRD facilities on the East Bank of Jefferson Parish will be closed on Wednesday due to the boil water advisory and the potential for low water pressure in the morning, according to parish officials.
All other Government buildings, including the Yenni Building, will be open.
Also, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport officials say all restrooms and water fountains in the airport terminal are closed due to the loss of water pressure after a water main break outside of the East Bank treatment plant. Only prepackaged food and beverages are available in Airport concessions.
"The real message I want to say is this recovery and the restoration, the pressure back into the system, is going to come in phases. So at some point, and we hope as soon as possible, we're working as fast as we can," Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng said. "At some point, the pressure is gonna build back in your home. And it's going to feel like normal. You're going to turn your faucet on, and it's going to feel like normal pressure, it is not, we're still under a boil water advisory when that water comes back on as normal."
Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng addressed the media shortly before 7 p.m.
While crews are working to make repairs to the water main, officials ask residents to please limit non-essential activities like washing dishes and doing laundry.
