NEW ORLEANS — The executive director of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage is planning to retire, the board of directors announced on Friday.
Don Marshall will retire after the 2024 Jazz Festival, according to our partners at Nola.com. Marshall started his role leading the nonprofit that owns Jazz Fest in 2004; the proceeds from the festival helps to support an array of free festivals to cultural and educational initiatives year-round.
According to Nola.com, "Don has been extremely valuable to our organization's growth and success" Tara Hernandez, board chair of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation told our partners.
Marshall spearheaded a series of local music festivals after Hurricane Katrina, including Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival, Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival and Congo Square Rhythms.
He also helped to create the Jazz & Heritage concert series and the Heritage School of Music and Performance Hall; a renovation of the George & Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center.
Following the upcoming 2024 Jazz Festival, Marshall will go into retirement after his 20 year-tenure.
