NEW ORLEANS — On Tuesday, the U.S. International Trade Commission voted to impose new tariffs on frozen warmwater shrimp from four countries(Ecuador, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam).
For years, Louisiana shrimpers have demanded a cap on shrimp imports.
“Countries selling shrimp below their cost to the U.S. undermine Louisiana producers and Louisiana jobs. We should use every tool we have to ensure fairness in dealing with American businesses,” said Dr. Cassidy.
Senator Bill Cassidy and Senator Roger Wicker both released statements applauding the decision.
Wicker says the decision is a critical step in supporting American workers and ensuring a fair market for high-quality, domestically sourced seafood.
“This is a significant victory for Mississippi’s shrimp industry. For generations, many Mississippians have relied on shrimping to support their families and communities,” Senator Wicker said. “I applaud the ITC for making this decision. It will help keep our shrimpers on a level playing field with foreign competitors.”
