I-10, Hwy 11 reopened after smoke and fog shut them down for hours

Officials closed I-10 due to dense fog causing poor visibility and in the wake of Tuesday's fatal crash in the same area.

NEW ORLEANS — The NOPD along with DOTD have lifted all road closures due to visibility issues.

I-10 both eastbound and westbound in New Orleans East is now open.  NOPD says I-510 and Highway 11 also reopened.

Causeway officials have waived all Causeway Bridge tolls because traffic being diverted from I-10 is causing heavy congestion. I-55 is also an alternative. There is some fog on that span, but it is not as heavy as it is in New Orleans East.

Some smoke from the marsh fire in New Orleans East has reached the Causeway Bridge, however, there are no advisories or restrictions at this time.

"Traffic volume is exceptionally heavy, so it is imperative to be extremely careful driving this morning.  Already had one breakdown that we just moved cleared from travel lanes," Causeway Commissioner Carlton Dufrechou said.

Officials closed westbound and eastbound Interstate 10 for several hours Wednesday morning due to dense fog in the area and extremely poor visibility.

Similar to Tuesday, only a small area near Little Woods was affected, but, in those spots visibility was nearly zero, causing some drivers, even with no one else on the road, to pull to the side.

"It's very, very scary," said one motorist. "You get to a point where you cannot see."
