Inmate who escaped custody while at University Medical Center back in custody, sheriff reports

Darren Mitchell was originally booked into the OJC on April 18 on charges of purse snatching and possession of a firearm by a felon.

NEW ORLEANS — Orleans Parish Sheriff’s deputies and New Orleans police end their search for an inmate who escaped from University Medical Center Wednesday night.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office says they found 32-year-old Darren Mitchell and he is now back in sheriff’s custody.

“OPSO deputies with the support of the U.S. Marshall Taskforce apprehended Mitchell at a home in New Orleans East located in the 4800 block of Bonita Drive without incident,” OPSO spokesperson Casey McGee says.

According to McGee, Mitchell will be routed back to UMC where he will be treated for injuries he sustained when he jumped from the second floor of the UMC parking garage to escape officers.

Mitchell was originally booked into the OJC on April 18 on charges of purse snatching and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was also in custody due to a warrant issued by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office according to OPSO spokesperson Casey McGee.

The sheriff's office says Mitchell was brought to UMC after complaining about stomach pains but escaped from the hospital around 10:45 p.m.

They said he was unshackled from the bed so he could use the restroom. That is when they say he ran from the hospital wearing a hospital gown, shorts, and shackles.
